The invention relates to an engine braking method for a supercharged internal combustion engine with an exhaust gas turbocharger. The invention further relates to a device for modulating an engine braking power of a motor vehicle with a supercharged internal combustion engine. According to the invention, the exhaust gas turbocharger is designed as an electrically motor-assisted exhaust gas turbocharger, wherein the adjustment of the desired or requested engine braking power is achieved by acceleration of a rotor of the exhaust gas turbocharger by electric motor operation (S4) of the exhaust gas turbocharger and/or by braking of the rotor (11, 12, 13) by generator operation (S5) of the exhaust gas turbocharger.
