Method for controlling an internal combustion engine (1) with more than one cylinder (2), wherein individual cylinders (2) can be switched off according to a predeterminable pattern depending on the required power output, wherein the pattern consists of a temporal sequence of commands for ignition and commands for skipping ignition, wherein the pattern is derived with a calculation rule such that, for example, every third or fifth or seventh cylinder or (2n+1)th cylinder is skipped, wherein (2n+1) is preferably coprime to the number of cylinders.
