Method for operating a driver assistance system in a motor vehicle, wherein the motor vehicle comprises a detection device for detecting articulation angle changes between a trailer of the motor vehicle and the motor vehicle, comprising the steps: a) beginning detection of the articulation angle changes, b) detecting a first steering angle information describing a steering angle of the motor vehicle by means of a steering angle detection device at a first detection point in time at which a stability condition evaluating an articulation angle change is satisfied, c) detecting a second steering angle information at a second detection point in time at which the stability condition is satisfied, d) determining a relative articulation angle value as a sum of the articulation angle changes between the first and the second detection point in time, e) calculating a drawbar length value for the trailer and/or an absolute articulation angle value at the first and/or second detection point in time as a function of the first steering angle information, the second steering angle information, the relative articulation angle value and predetermined vehicle geometry data, and f) controlling a driving intervention and/or outputting information as a function of the calculated drawbar length value and/or the calculated absolute articulation angle value.
