In order to achieve advantages with respect to energy consumption as well as flexibility and adaptability to different power requirements in a method for starting up an internal combustion engine (7) of a generator set (9) of an electrical energy distribution system (1) on board a ship, it is proposed that the internal combustion engine (7) is started by operating a generator (6) of the generator set (9) as an electric motor by means of a power converter (5) and bringing the internal combustion engine (7) to its ignition speed by means of the generator (6) operating as an electric motor.
