A combustor (16) has a laser ignitor (40) mounted to a casing (20), remotely from a liner (24) of the combustion chamber. The laser ignitor (40) has an igniter beam path (46) for igniting the fuel and air mixture in the combustion chamber (16), the igniter beam path (46) extending at least partially across the air plenum (28) surrounding the liner (24) and into the combustion chamber (16) through a corresponding beam path aperture (46) provided in the liner (24).
