Method for operating a headlamp system and headlamp system for a vehicle

The method involves detecting light distribution (LV0-LV3) in proximity of a vehicle using headlights (11,12), and calculating an emitting light pattern (LM) for illuminating the surroundings of the vehicle as a function from the detected light distribution. The headlight is controlled according to the calculated pattern of light. The information relating to the traffic situation in the vicinity of the vehicle is detected, the traffic conditions of criticality class are assigned and the light pattern is adjusted as a function of the associated criticality class. An independent claim is included for a headlight system for vehicle.
