The method involves discharging exhaust gases from two cylinders (30) through an exhaust system that is provided with exhaust pipes from the cylinders coming together to form an exhaust manifold. The autoignition is initiated under high loads with exhaust gas from exhaust-gas-supplying cylinder and is discharged from the cylinder into the exhaust system. The exhaust gas is introduced into an adjacent exhaust-gas-receiving cylinder through the exhaust system.
