The illumination device comprises a display unit (10), which is mountable on a passenger cabin ceiling of the transportation medium, and a control unit (12) for controlling the display unit. An external parameter detection unit (14,16,18) is provided for detecting the external parameter related to an actual view of the transportation medium. The control unit controls the display unit in response to the detected external driving parameter, such that the display unit displays a static or dynamic representation corresponding to the actual view of the transportation medium. An independent claim is included for a method for generating ambient lighting in a passenger cabin of a transportation medium, particularly a rail vehicle.
