System and method for warning a driver of a vehicle about traffic situations

The system has a position-determining device for determining a position of a vehicle from received signals, and a storage device for storing map data representing courses of roads. A route-calculating device calculates a possible route along courses of roads represented by the map data. A receiver receives information regarding a nature and position of a traffic-related feature. A relevance determining device determines relevance of information received by the receiver based on specific criteria. A warning device is used for issuing a warning to a vehicle's driver. An independent claim is also included for a method for warning a driver of a vehicle regarding traffic- related features utilizing a warning system mounted in the vehicle.
