The present invention relates to a positive electrode active material for a lithium secondary battery having improved thermal stability, a method for producing the positive electrode active material, and a lithium secondary battery containing the same. The positive electrode active material may be represented by the following Chemical Formula 1 and contain particles having an average particle size of 200nm to 1 µ m, wherein the surfaces of the particles are coated with a uniform carbon coating layer.
