A brake rotor, a brake system including a brake rotor, and a method of boronizing a brake rotor, wherein the brake rotor includes a rotor body including a braking surface. The rotor body includes an iron alloy and the braking surface includes a layer of FeB phases in the braking surface. The brake system includes the brake rotor and a brake pad engageable with the braking surface. The method includes boronizing the braking surface and forming a FeB phases on the braking surface and cooling the rotor body to ambient temperature.
