The method involves comparing detected geographical position of object with stored map data. The object is road sign (10), is recognized on vehicle side and distance information of object is evaluated by optical character recognition. The distance information is indicative of relative distance to primary reference point with known geographical position, which is aligned with secondary reference point of digital road map. The position of the motor vehicle (1) is determined, if the primary and secondary reference points corresponding to the same geographical location. An independent claim is included for driver assistance system for motor vehicle.
