The engine (10) has a pneumatically operated functional element i.e. control butterfly valve (34), for adjusting a variable exhaust-gas turbocharger i.e. high pressure-exhaust gas turbocharger, and controlled by a pneumatic control device. A bypass (18) is provided for the control device that is activated and/or deactivated over a switching device i.e. electrical switching valve (58). The control device is designed as an electro-pneumatic transducer (46). A regulating device regulates flow of exhaust gases over turbines (30, 36) of the turbocharger.
