The geodetic measuring device has an eye imaging device (4,4') for detecting eye images of an eye (3) of a user. An evaluation unit is formed for implementation of an automatic viewing direction dependent target functionality. The evaluation unit receives an eye image, determines a viewing direction of the user eye. The motorized changes of the orientation of target device (5) are carried out from the viewing direction of the user eye or by the eye information. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a method for controlling a target device of a geodetic measuring device, particularly a theodolite or a total station; and (2) a computer program product with program code.
