The device has insulation monitoring device (36) that is integrated with differential current monitoring device (38) in electric vehicle (6) to form a structural unit as a combined monitoring device (41) with self-monitoring unit. A switching device (50) is provided for separating power on-board network (52) from loading station. The differential current monitoring device is designed for current sensitive detection of fault currents. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) method for safe driving operation and for safe loading and regenerative operation of electric vehicle at loading station; and (2) apparatus for safe driving operation and for safe loading and regenerative operation of electric vehicle at loading station.
