The method involves detecting temperature in a communication module (700) by a temperature monitoring device (79) that comprises a voltage dividing device. Mains current for charging an electric vehicle is reduced through the communication module if the detected temperature exceeds a threshold value. The mains current is switched off through the communication module after the reduction of the mains current and when the temperature within a predetermined time period does not fall below the threshold value. The voltage dividing device is provided with a fixed resistor, a thermistor or sensor. An independent claim is also included for a communication module for a battery charger for an electric vehicle.
