A brake cylinder, in particular for rail vehicles, with an operating brake piston (1) axially movable within a housing (11), wherein the operating brake piston (1) has a spindle extension (2) with a thread (13) as part of an axially movable spindle, wherein the brake cylinder has a locking device (3) for brake force locking with a coupling mechanism (4) having at least two couplings (8, 9), wherein the operating brake piston (1) is connected via a threaded connection (15) to a first rotatably mounted coupling element (5) of the coupling mechanism (4), which is connectable through a first of the two couplings (8) with a second rotatably mounted coupling element (6) of the coupling mechanism (4), wherein the said second rotatably mounted coupling element (6) is connectable through the second of the two couplings (9) with a third coupling element (7), and wherein the second and third coupling elements (6, 7) are designed such that the connection of both coupling elements (6, 7) forming the second coupling (9) is established by linear displacement of at least one of the two coupling elements (7) relative to the other coupling element (6).
