- The subject-matter of this application relates to a rearview mirror assembly comprising a rearview mirror element (500) including a first substrate (502) having a first surface (504) and a second surface (506), and an edge (505) treated to define a rounded portion that improves durability of said edge as compared to an edge not so treated, wherein a spectral filter material (596) is disposed circumferentially around a perimeter of the second surface (506), a second substrate (512) having third and fourth surfaces (515, 514) and an edge surface, the first substrate (502) being larger than the second substrate (512), and the second substrate (512) disposed in a spaced-apart relationship with respect to the first substrate (502) to form a chamber therebetween such as not to extend from behind the first substrate (502), an electrochromic medium enclosed in the chamber, a carrier assembly receiving the rearview mirror element, the carrier assembly including a substantially rigid portion (901 c) extending along a back of the mirror element, and a peripheral gripping portion (903c) integrated with substantially rigid portion (901 c), wherein the peripheral gripping portion (903c) extends from the substantially rigid portion (901 c) towards the first substrate (502) such as to conceal the edge of the second substrate, and wherein the edge (505) of the first substrate, treated to define a rounded portion, is observable to a viewer.
