The present invention relates to improved electro-optic rearview mirror elements and assemblies incorporating the same. In particular, it relates to a mirror assembly wherein a mirror element comprising an electrochromic material arranged in a gap between a front substrate (912c) and a rear substrate (902c) is attached to a rigid carrier plate (901c) and held in place by a peripheral gripping portion (903c) associated to said plate.
