Mode switching technique for a navigation device

A technique for switching (300) between route calculation modes of a navigation device (100) is described. A method embodiment comprises the steps of monitoring one or more travel parameters and evaluating a consistency (1000) between the selected mode (204) and the one or more travel parameters (S; V; 508; 612). In case the evaluation indicates an inconsistency, the method embodiment further comprises the steps of determining a mode consistent with the one or more travel parameters (S; V; 508; 612) and prompting for selection of the consistent mode or selecting the consistent mode. The evaluation and/or determination further depends on traffic information data available for the current location.
