The method involves connecting a functional layer (6) with an acoustically effective foam layer (7) on a side turned away from an outer soft top fabric layer (8). Structure height of a convertible soft top cover is reduced by laser energy application by recesses (14) in the foam layer in an area attached to a transverse roof arch (9) and/or body areas. The fabric layer is arranged on a side of the foam layer turned away from the functional layer. A section penetrating the foam layer is produced in the foam layer by the laser energy application.
