The method involves determining a set of vehicle data characterizing an actual driving situation based on sensors (4). An actual driving dynamic border area of a motor vehicle (1) is determined under consideration of the vehicle data. The border area is utilized as basis for a driving reference output to a driver. The dynamic border area and/or the driving reference are adapted under consideration of an actual condition and/or the driving data characterizing the ability of the driver and/or optimization criterion. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle comprising a driver assistance system having a control device for implementing a method for operating the driver assistance system.
