The Method involves detecting abnormal combustion in combustion chamber (14) of cylinder (12). Signal representative of combustion state is recorded by detector (46a) and obtaining combustion indicators from signal and then converted to new indicators, and parameter characterizing distribution of N values of combined combustion indicators acquired over N cycles preceding cycle are determined in progress. Abnormal combustion is detected by comparing new indicator with previously determined threshold and abnormal combustion course detected in chamber is controlled.
