The method involves changing the pressure of a fluid to change the drive torque of a fluid pump (4) during engine shutdown so that the crankshaft (3) stops in a position favorable for restarting. The fluid pressure is changed by controlling a variable throughput fluid pump. An independent claim is also included for a system for controlling stopping position of a crankshaft during shutdown of an internal combustion engine.
