The internal combustion engine has means (10) by which the driving torque of the fuel pump (4) can be influenced. The aforesaid means to influence pressure in the fuel lines (9a-9d) comprise a fuel return line (11) in which is installed a first shut-off element (12) so that the emergency driving torque of the fuel pump is controllable by the aforesaid means. A second shut-off element (14) is installed in the common fuel line (8), and the fuel return line branches from the common fuel line upstream of the second shut-off element.
