A battery charging device is joined via a charging cable to a plug which functions together with the socket contact connected to the battery, in which the plug has a plug housing in which are arranged the plug pins connected to the charging cable. A device associated with the plug responds when the plug and the socket contact are mechanically separated. The plug (10) has a handle with which the plug (10) is drawn out of the socket contact (22) and the handle is provided with a switching element which during separation is actuated and is joined via a signal path to the charging device (20).
