A diesel engine has a pipe union delivering fuel at a regulated temperature to a fuel injector unit. The fuel pipe has a surrounding muff forming a heat exchanger with an inlet pipe and an outlet pipe for a temperature-controlled fluid. The maximum radial inner width of the outer chamber (24) is no more than one sixth that of the inner pipe (23).
