An independent claim is also included for a device for measuring a parking space for a parking assisting system of a vehicle. Preferred Features: The length of the parking gap is determined by operating the distance sensor with a first scanning rate and stopping the length measuring step on scanning an object within a prescribed region within a prescribed region and branching to the step of scanning the first corner limit.
