The invention relates to a method for assisting a driver of a motor vehicle (1) when parking, in which the motor vehicle (1) is moved past a parking space and sensor data from at least one distance sensor (4) of the motor vehicle (1) are provided while the motor vehicle (1) is being moved past the parking space, the parking space is measured based on the provided sensor data and a starting position for a parking maneuver into the parking space is determined based on the measurement of the parking space, wherein at least one piece of information describing the starting position is output to the driver while the motor vehicle (1) is being moved past the parking space.
