An automotive seat (7) has an armrest (21) that pivots between a horizontal position and an upright position. During a side impact the armrest pivots to cover the shoulder and thorax from the side. The seat further has a headrest with side flanges that pivot forwards during side impact to prevent extreme head side-motion.
