Process for controlling a particle filter

The method involves calculating a filter load value from a pressure loss and a volumetric flow of an exhaust gas, and recording the value as a function of a drive parameter. The filter load value is differentiated with respect to the drive parameter to form a filter load differentiation. The differentiation is evaluated, and a particle filter breakdown is concluded when the differentiation is less than or equal to zero.
