The method involves at least partially counteracting movement of the vehicle occupant relative to the vehicle seat through the seat belt when driving downhill and uphill. The vehicle occupant is restrained around the pelvis. The position of the occupant is determined by pressure sensors (4,5) mounted in the seat whose output signals are fed to a control device of the belt tightener.
