The method involves forming a mean value of a measurement variable of all actuators of a given type in dependence of a parameter. A deviation dependent on the parameter is formed. A lower and upper limit values dependent on the deviation and the mean value formed. An actuator is classified as defective when one of the limit values is exceeded by an individual value of the measurement variable of the actuator.
