The method involves detecting a vehicle acceleration and/or a force acting on the vehicle, comparing a sensor signal with a triggering threshold (1) for the at least one protection device and generating at least one trigger signal depending on the comparison in a control unit that also detects state information (8.1,8.2) for at least one vehicle door contact that is used to adapt the triggering threshold value.. An independent claim is also included for a device for triggering at least one vehicle occupant protection device.
