A fuel tank assembly (10) includes a tank (12) defining an aperture (40) on a first generally planar surface (48). A plurality of retaining members (50) extend outwardly from the first planar surface (48) and are arranged generally around the aperture (40). A fuel sender assembly (20) is disposed in the tank (12) and adapted to mate with the first planar surface (48) of the tank (12) around the aperture (40) in an assembled position. The fuel sender assembly (20) defines a second generally planar surface (54). A retention plate (26) is adapted to engage the plurality of retaining members (50) and urge the fuel sender flange (30) against the first planar surface (48) of the tank in the assembled position. The retention plate (26) includes a central body portion (74) laterally offset from and adapted to substantially cover the second planar surface (54) of the fuel sender flange (30) in the assembled position.
