The start and/or end of fuel injection are detected from the pressure variation in the common-rail system. The start is registered from a pressure drop, the end from a rise. The variation is compared with thresholds. Values are compared with expectations, and fuel metering is controlled to bring them in line. Errors are detected. An independent claim is included for corresponding equipment, including a sensor in the high pressure region.
