The engine operating process involves fuel being pumped by a preliminary supply pump in a low pressure region, and by a main supply pump in a pressure store via at least one fuel measuring device into the combustion chamber. A pressure sensor records the pressure for the high pressure region. This value is compared with a preset maximum value in the lower pressure region.
