The electronic engine control unit (132) measures signals related to the transmission system. It determines whether any functional problem (especially safety-related) exists in drive train components responsible for torque transmission, i.e. the clutch (114), clutch actuator (116), gears (102), gear change actuation unit (106), electronic gear selection unit (110) or the signal transmission path. The electronic engine controller (132) limits maximum permissible engine torque, should any defect be detected. An independent claim is included for the corresponding system.
