Method for estimating the transverse acceleration of a vehicle
DRIVE
March 2, 2005
The transverse acceleration measuring and limiting system for a HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) is especially used with a tractor attached to a trailer on a fifth wheel. It has an acceleration sensor and computer or table of acceleration values to set a safe limit to the lateral acceleration while swerving or changing lanes on a motorway. There are also sensors measuring the steering angle of the front wheels of the tractor unit. The computer may perform ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and RSC (Rollover Stability Control) functions and may initiate braking before the swerve maneuver takes place.
