The method involves using a start-stop device that automatically switches the internal combustion engine off as soon as the operating conditions defined for a shut-down pertain for a defined period. The motor vehicle driver can inhibit the automatic shut-down within the predefined time period. The driver receives an indication as soon as he can inhibit automatic shut-down.
