The directional sensor signal is digitized in accordance with the first or second characteristic depending on light conditions. The device has a sensor device with at least one sensor for detecting the directional light characteristics in the direction of travel, at least one global sensor for ambient light, an evaluation device for determining illumination device switching conditions with a digitizing arrangement with a stored analogue to digital conversion characteristic (41) and at least one second characteristic (42). The digitizing of the directional sensor signal is conducted in accordance with the first or second characteristic depending on the light conditions.
