To apply separate decorative components to a sign, especially vehicle signs and the like, a carrier strip (1) with the additional embellishment (8) is placed over the sign to be decorated. Pressure is applied to the decoration surface by a die (14), within an edge zone to give an adhesive bond, and the carrier strip is detached by a lifter (16). The sign is covered and retained by a retainer (15) at the edge zone, at least while the carrier strip is removed.
