The device has a function for generating and storing control signals, a device that can be activated and deactivated for outputting control signals to final control elements and an integrated monitoring device for detecting faults in providing control signals and for controlling the output device depending on the fault detection. The device generates control signals (17,18) in a motor vehicle depending on input signals (9,11), especially in relation to the distance and speed relative to an object in the driving direction with a function (13) for generating and storing control signals, a device (14) that can be activated and deactivated for outputting control signals to final control elements and an integrated monitoring device (19) for detecting faults in providing control signals and controlling the output device depending on the fault detection.
