Closed loop diesel engine EGR control including event monitoring

DRIVE April 7, 2004

A processor provides feedback control of the exhaust gas recirculation valve based upon the actual position of the valve and its desired position. The processor generates error signals from the position data and from the actual EGR flow and the desired flow. The two error signals are used to develop a position control signal. The air intake system (32) is managed by a control strategy to determine a desired boost pressure and EGR rate. The control strategy develops duty cycle signals for operating an actuator (66) of the turbocharger (44) and EGR actuator (56) via respective driver circuits.
