The fuel injection system operating method has the fuel injection effected via at least one piezoactuator for each engine cylinder in at least 2 successive programmed injection phases (808,816,820), the timing point (828) of the successive injection phase dependent on the preceding injection phase. The programming can be provided by static and dynamic interrupts (812,824).
