The method involves adapting different types of fuel-air mixture deviation by estimating the influence of a first type of mixture deviation on a previously conducted mixture deviation of a second type during or after adaptation of the first type of mixture deviation and correcting the adaptation of the second type of deviation depending on the estimate.
