Particulate amount detecting means is provided for directly or indirectly detecting the amount of particulate trapped in the particulate filter (12), and fuel injection pressure controlling means reduces the fuel injection pressure from the fuel injection pressure adjusted in accordance with the operational condition of the engine, when the particulate amount detected by the particulate amount detecting means reaches a predeterminable amount. Accordingly, the fuel injection pressure is reduced from the fuel injection pressure set in accordance with the operational condition of the engine when the particulate amount trapped in the particulate filter (12) reaches the predeterminable amount, so that the combustion slowly proceeds to increase the exhaust-gas temperature, thereby regenerating the particulate filter (12) while suppressing the occurrence of misfire.
