November 26, 2003
The present invention discloses an engine starting device (14) for an internal combustion engine (12, 313, 521), the engine having a rotatable engine member (26,317, 515) that is rotatable to start the engine. The engine starting device comprises an energy storing mechanism including at least one elastic member (50,321,575), and an input element (142,331,601) engageable with the elastic member, the input element being movable in response to rotation of the rotatable engine member to load the elastic member during engine coastdown. The device also includes an output element (198,417,535) that is movable in response to unloading of the elastic member to cause the rotatable engine member to rotate.
