A System and Method for Controlling an Engine

A system and method for controlling at least one pressure responsive device (42,44,46,48) in an engine (12) is disclosed. Each pressure responsive device (42,44,46,48) can vary a compression ratio in a respective engine cylinder (24,26,28,30). The method includes supplying fluid pressure to the pressure responsive devices (42,44,46,48) to change the compression ratio in the cylinders (24,26,28,30), indicating when one of the devices (42,44,46,48) has a deteriorated response and increasing the fluid pressure to the device (42,44,46,48) to change the compression ratio in the respective cylinder (24,26,28,30) in response to the indication.
