Rear view mirror assembly

A rear view mirror assembly for a motor vehicle comprising: a stabilisation device to which a mirror plate is attached via a support structure (20) and a position adjusting device (10); a housing (30) which accommodates the support structure (20) and stabilisation device; and a base (70) with a plate (71) attachable to the side of a vehicle and an extension (72) in which a vertical pivot post (60) is mounted. A first contoured surface (42) on a lower end of a post surrounding sleeve fixed to the support structure engages a complementary second contoured surface (43) on an upper surface of a ring (43') which is fixed to the pivot post (60) by means of a pin (92) which is situated in aligned radial holes (62, 91) in the pivot post and the ring (43'). A spring (44) restrained by a reaction washer (45) urges the contoured surfaces (42, 43) against each other.
